Why IDS: Ideals

A warm and caring environment
IDS provides a caring and cordial atmosphere in which all members of the school family-students, staff and parents respect, enjoy and seek to help one another. Our moderate class size allows students and staff members to build close relationships. IDS seeks to create a microcosm of what the world can be.

Respect for ourselves and others
We give each other room to be ourselves, and we value openness and the constructive expression of differences of opinion. Respect is a way of life at IDS.

Above all, a community of learners
At the heart of Independent Day School is teacher training. The IDS spirit is like the Olympic spirit, where the best always work to get better. IDS teachers study together, discovering the latest research in what works in educating children and using the methods that have proven most effective. We meet weekly to ensure that we are meeting the needs of all our students. We study and practice communication and cooperative skills ourselves, knowing that the example we set and the school climate we create will motivate our students to reach, stretch and grow.

"Independent Day School has become a national model for cooperative learning. It is with pride each year that we invite teachers from across the country to view the excellence they have achieved."

Dr. Spencer and Laurie Kagan, international authors and leaders in cooperative learning and multiple intelligences
