Middle School Students
To Host
Poetry Coffeehouse
For
immediate release:
March 1, 2003
Tampa, Fla.
Middle
School students at Independent Day School-Corbett Campus (IDS-CC)
in Tampa will bring parents, friends, students and teachers back
to the days of beatniks and bongos when they host the school's fourth
annual Poetry Coffeehouse on Thursday, March 13.
"It will be a time for wearing black turtleneck sweaters and
dark shades, for snapping your fingers, sipping coffee, and listening
to some 'cool' poetry," said English teacher Michael Vokoun.
Sixth graders will perform at 1:30 in the afternoon, and seventh
and eighth grade students will perform at 7:00 p.m. Both performances
will take place in the intimate setting of the IDS-CC theater, which
will become a temporary, beat generation-type coffeehouse. The theater
is located on the school's campus on Orange Grove Drive alongside
Lake Lipsey.
Under the direction of the middle school English teaching team of
Lynne Grigelevich,
Amy Ragg Smith and Vokoun, students will perform a wide variety
of poetry selections, many with costumes and props. While the purpose
of the evening is to instill a love of poetry in students by exposing
them to many different types of poetry, it is also an opportunity
for them to
enhance speaking skills. Some students will perform solo, others
in pairs, or in small groups.
