IDS RENAMED
TO HONOR PAST PRESIDENT, BENEFACTOR
CORNELIA CORBETT
For immediate release:
December 12, 2002
Tampa, FL
The
Board of Trustees of Independent Day School (IDS) has announced
its unanimous decision to rename the 34-year old independent school
located in northwest Hillsborough County. Effective immediately,
the school will be called Independent Day School-Corbett Campus,
in honor and recognition of its past president, benefactor, and
school visionary Cornelia Corbett.
"The history of IDS was grounded on leading educational practices,
often ahead of its time, even in the early years," said IDS
Headmaster Dr. Joyce Burick Swarzman. "Cornelia Corbett has
always translated this vision into action, leading by example, with
energy, time, dedication and dollars. Her presidency epitomized
excellence in leadership qualities - especially those of vision,
commitment, courage, and humility."
Corbett has served the IDS community for more than 20 years, acting
as president of the board of trustees from 1981 to 1985 and, again,
from 1992 to 2002. Under her leadership and through her philanthropy,
the school carried out a significant construction project in 1986
to accommodate the increasing number of families attracted to the
school's exciting, inquiry-based curriculum, and to permit further
growth. In 1993, Corbett led the effort to rezone and purchase property
across the street from the current campus for a state-of-the-art
middle school.
Corbett, her husband, Richard, and her family's foundation, the
William Stamps Farish Foundation, were the primary contributors
to the construction and completion of the middle school. In addition,
when the school outgrew its former multi-purpose room, Cornelia
contributed generously to the building of a new, air-conditioned
gymnasium and meeting hall.
"Cornelia is such a humble person who has always preferred
to remain behind the scenes," said Swarzman. She has helped
transform IDS into a truly awesome opportunity for children, as
well as an innovative school that models cutting edge learning strategies
for hundreds of visiting teachers a year. Cornelia Corbett has created
a legacy at IDS. We announce our new name with great pride."
