Independent
Day School -Corbett Campus
Continues Tradition of Community Service
For
immediate release
February 11, 2003
Tampa, FL
Thursday,
February 13, Independent Day School-Corbett Campus (IDS-CC) will
break from the normal classroom routine to send its middle school
students out into the local area for Community Service Day, an annual
school tradition for more than a decade.
IDS Middle School Director Of Studies Betty George says, "IDS
has a long history of giving openly to the community whether it
be canned food drives at Thanksgiving, or our school-wide support
of the Spring at the winter holidays. Making donations is very different
from working directly with people in need. Community Service Day
allows our middle schoolers to give of themselves and we believe
that is the greatest gift of all!"
Teams of teachers and students are performing public service work
at the following locations, this coming Thursday morning and afternoon:
Flatwoods Park - With bikes in tow, students will clean up both
the paved and off road trails in the park.
Tampa General Hospital - This team will begin the day in the children's
ward reading to and playing with patients. In the afternoon, the
group travels to Ben T. Davis Beach for a beach cleanup.
Peace Food Pantry Mission, Tarpon Springs - Students will help box
and bag food donations.
Tacoma Park - Students will take part in this Mayor's Beautification
Program project. In the afternoon, they are visiting Park Place
Assisted Living center to make Valentine cookies with the residents.
Ronald McDonald House - Students will take over the "house
duties" for the residents in the morning (cleaning and such)
and then will go to Davis Island Beach for a cleanup.
Eldernet assistance - Two homes with elderly persons that need help
with yard work will be visited. In the afternoon, the group will
go to Shriner's Hospital to lead arts and crafts activities with
patients.
Metropolitan Ministries - After a tour of the shelter, students
will work in the shop, sorting clothes, etc.
Lake Magdalene Methodist Church - The day will be spent removing
graffiti on a wall and cleaning inside a home that the church owns.
