Basketball
has Up & Down Season
By Philip Jones
"Dribble it, pass it... make a basket!"
This year the IDS basketball team had an up and down season. The
record of the team was 7-9. The season started in November and ended
in February. Coaches of the varsity team were Mr. Vokoun and Mr.
Dewey. There were two junior varsity teams. Mr. Vokoun also coached
the junior varsity-2 team and Mr. Dewey coached junior varsity-
I team. Leaders of the team this year were Taylor Dunn and Randy
Hamzah.
"It was a rebuilding year for the IDS team," said Coach
Dewey. Two up and coming players were sixth graders Philip Jones
and Dan Tobin. They also played on the junior varsity l team. "That's
spectacular to have such excellent sixth grade players helping out
on the varsity team!" exclaimed Ms.Boza.
The year-end tournament was held at Mary Help of Christian School
where the IDS team faced a difficult opponent, versus Berkeley Prep,
in the first round. Unfortunately the team came up short and exited
only playing one game in the tournament. Coach Dewey said, "The
basketball team can learn from this year, and we will hopefully
end the next season with a winning record."
IDS
Softball Team Worked Hard
By Michael Giocondo
Softball had a very different approach this year. Coach Rizzo decided
to work with not only the middle school but also the fifth grade
so that she would have a large enough team.
"The 2001 softball season was a building year as we had many
newcomers to the game," says Coach Rizzo.
Coach Rizzo was very impressed with the steady progress that the
entire team made in skills such as fielding, hitting, and overall
teamwork. Coach Rizzo explained that next year she would like to
continue to focus on the team working more on pitching, hitting,
and stealing bases. She also made a point to mention that the team
was led by Erin Swartz, their eighth grade captain.
There are even plans for next year. The team will be able to practice
more effectively with the purchase of a new pitching machine. Coach
Rizzo looks forward to working with the 2002 softball team.
