Physical
Education and How it Comes to Be
By Colin Pinals
For PE, Coach Smith knows what units are coming up in the year from
day one. This is because he writes lesson plans at the beginning
of the year.
He likes the new gym a lot better than the old one because it is
more square. It does not have the big depressions in the wall as
Corbet Hall does, and losing a ball behind the big
bleachers is no longer a challenge when on the west campus.
The new sports that students play are usually created from
ideas from the Internet, Coach Cathy, or Coach Rizzo. Units run
mostly three weeks in length.
The units covered in the third trimester were handball, matball,
softball, and hockey. Matball and handball were the units that the
students liked best.
Middle school students look forward to more innovations from the
physical education department next year!=
Students
Celebrate '20-20 Vision' in Art Classes
By Alex Salisbury
The theme of the 2001 art curriculum was "20-20 Vision: Looking
Back on 20th Century Art."
All Middle School students participated in ceramics, creating something
different in each grade level. Eighth grade students made surrealistic
animal sculptures while studying Salvador Dali. The sixth graders
followed the tradition of creating ceramic masks, and the seventh
graders designed pottery using various hand-building techniques
while studying the most famous 20th century artist, Pablo Picasso.
The entire Middle School also created locker room art displays using
typography as a theme.
After a brief experimentation with abstract expressionist painting,
seventh grade students moved on to a unit on wire sculpture while
learning about Alexander Calder, a famous 20th century artist.
Do any Middle School parents remember the Poetry Coffeehouse? Well,
guess who made the tablecloths there, the seventh-grade students!
Speaking of events, Fine Arts Night was on May 17th, 2001. Fine
Arts Night had a wonderful art show. Every IDS student from Pre-K
thru Eighth Grade had one unique piece of artwork on display. Cooperative
art projects were also be exhibited.
