Seventh
and Eighth Graders Enjoy Great Literatures
By Alyssa Sewall
In a recent discussion Mr. Vokoun, English teacher of the seventh
and eighth grade, shared some thoughts about his classes.
The eighth graders in class recently read Romeo and Juliet by William
Shakespeare. He centered on the text and the cultural differences
between then and today. "Four hundred years is a big difference!"
Mr. Vokoun explained.
Overall, Mr. Vokoun thinks that the eighth grade has met his expectations
for the year. He thinks that they are fully prepared for the challenges
ahead in high school English.
"Following directions, and always pushing oneself to learn
more, are the skills eighth graders should have mastered by the
end of the year before moving on," he commented.
Now what about seventh grade? Seventh graders have just finished
reading Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse. They followed this with
a literary project combining their knowledge of their last three
pieces of literature: Freak the Mighty by W.R. Philbrick, Of Mice
and Men by John Stienbeck, and Out of the Dust.
Overall, Mr. Voukon thinks that the seventh graders have definitely
met his expectations.
"The seventh graders are prepared for eight grade English because
they have grown as students in all phases of class," he said..
Yes, seventh grade should expect to see Mr. Vokoun in his same room
for next year. "I look forward to seeing their continued growth!"
Overall, there have been some very exciting things happening in
English class this trimester.
New
Coke Machine May Be Coming To Middle School
By Carson Rowe
The Coke machine debate has been hot on the IDS Student Council's
list for years, and now we are closer than ever to getting one.
With the new building and new lunchroom, there is maximum security!
"Instead of having kids hand out the drinks themselves, we
can have a machine do it, so we can all eat with our friends. The
school will even get some profit," explained Mrs. Boza.
"The last time we came close to getting one, we decided it
would go in Corbett Hall, but a few days later, it was broken into,
so the idea was nixed. If we do get one, it will probably go into
the kitchen, and be accessible to everyone," continued Mrs.
Boza.
"The idea was presented to Dr. Swarzman by some of the student
council, but it was left low on the 'things to do' list. The student
council believes if
we put it in writing, then we may have a better response,"
said Ashley Sierra. "For now, we are able too get one, but
it is the matter of actually going out and doing it that is delaying
its arrival."
We are now able to get a coke machine, but the matter is only left
to be approved by Dr. Swarzman. When the idea is approved, expect
to see a new coke machine in the kitchen!
