Boys'
Tennis Team Earned First Place
By Matthew Attal
The boys' tennis team had an outstanding year! The middle school
boys had the opportunity to sign up for the tennis team as part
of the middle school sports program. It lasted from March to April
and they practiced at North Lakes.
The boys' top eight players were Bobby Hernandez, Derek Redmon,
Chris Hargiss, Bryan Beasley, Matthew Attal, Jason Kim, Lars Steier,
and Ryan Jones. Coach Kathy said the boys earned first place this
season.
When asked what motivated him to play tennis for middle school,
Bryan Beasley said, "My dad encouraged me to play tennis in
order to become a better player." Jason Kim said, "I played
on the team with the hope of improving my skills."
The boys won first in the school league! Their final record was
zero losses, two ties and the rest were wins! A few of the schools
they played included Berkeley, Academy of the Holy
Names, and St. Mary's. The hardest match was against Berkely. That
was the first time in four years that IDS has captured first place!
The boy's tennis team had a great year and are proud of their first
place finish!
Girls'
Tennis Team Enjoyed a Smashing 2001 Season
The girls' tennis team has had a smashing season. Coach Kathy and
Coach O'Sullivan did a great job on coaching and cheering the team
to victory.
This year's team players were Amanda Lia, Leah Davis, Allie Winkles,
Andy Wallis, Kayleigh Wilson, Kelly Lawrence, Ashley Sinkiewicz,
Dalielle Miranda, Betsy Donovan, and Rachel Fieweger.
Sixth grade team member Rachel Fieweger said, "I love being
on the IDS tennis team because it's a great way to practice your
skills and have fun." She also exclaimed that this was her
first time on the IDS tennis team, and she loved having the experience
of being on a great team.
The team members agree that tennis is a wonderful sport. It is so
great because they play so many matches and have a fun time with
it. Even if they have never played tennis before, it is still fun.
Any middle school girl was allowed on the team. Last year Coach
Kathy allowed fifth graders to join the team. This year there was
such a tremendous turnout that there was no room for any additional
players from fifth grade. Coach Kathy has done a fantastic job of
coaching
beginners; the team has had amazing improvements.
The tennis team practiced every day except Tuesdays and played their
home matches at Northlakes. Their opponents were CDS, St. Lawrence,
Academy of the Holy Names, and Tampa Prep..
Tennis is a great sport because it enhances hand and eye coordination,
and it is a sport that can be enjoyed well into anyone's senior
years. Some really neat options are playing singles or doubles to
make it fun.
Consider joining the tennis team next year and join the fun!
