A
New Year, and More English
By Dalielle Miranda
So far this year, the seventh and eight grades have accomplished
many things in English class. Their teacher, Mr. Vokoun, says they
are learning to master grammar, have improved their writing, vocabulary,
and language, have completed many pieces of literature, and read
many books.
"The most recent book that the eighth graders have read,"
says Mr. Vokoun, "is called Homer's Odyssey, and after they
read it they will have to write an odyssey of their own."
The seventh grade just finished a book called Of Mice and Men that
will lead to a book of poems written in story form named Out of
the Dust.
Both seventh and eighth grade had a visit from the poet Gary Drilling
on February 15th. Both grades wrote a list poem that hopefully will
be published in a future Peacock Chronicle.
An activity that was held for both intermediate and middle school
to kick off the poetry unit was Poetry Alive! on February 8'h. Two
actors came to IDS and gave a performance (see article on Page I
).
Even though the seventh and eighth grades do lots of fun things,
they also have lots of work like book reports, essays, and many
different types of tests.
"By the end of the year," says Mr. Vokoun, "I want
both the seventh and eighth grade to increase their love of learning
through grammar, reading, writing, vocabulary and speaking."

Track Season was Great
By Vinny Euliano
The IDS track team was up against some tough competition this year,
but the team practiced a lot on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays,
and Fridays.
A basic practice involved running a warm up lap and coining in for
some stretches. During stretches a "word" went around
the circle. The word was said in sequence, and after everyone had
said the word, they moved on to the next stretch.
shifter stretches track team students did jumping jacks, pushups,
and sit-ups. Then they started to run whatever they needed to practice,
like the mile, the 800m, the 400m, the 200m, the l00m, and the 60m.
T here was both a varsity and junior varsity team. To be on varsity,
a student had to be at least thirteen unless the coach said otherwise.
Practice was held at Forest Hills field on Orange Grove Drive. The
track team meets were held at Berkeley Preparatory School.
The track meets consisted of field events such as junior varsity
running long jump and standing long jump or varsity running long
jump, standing long jump, discus, and shot put. The team ran against
other private schools such as Berkeley, Mary Help, and St. Mary's.
Coach Bronson and Coach Smith, the two track coaches, were very
proud of their team. "We did well against stiff competition,
and individually each student grew and improved," explained
Coach Bronson. Coach Smith added, "I am proud of the team and
all that they accomplished ! "
For those who came out, you saw wings on their feet and supported
IDS at the same time, thank you!
