View Ancient Artifacts at Tampa Museum of Art
By Madeline Sewall
On February 1st the IDS sixth grade took a field trip to the Tampa
Museum of Art to view artifacts of ancient Greece and Rome. Mrs.
Boza, the sixth grade social studies teacher, organized the trip
so that her students could gain a better understanding of daily
life in the ancient Greece and Rome.
The Tampa Museum of Art has the finest collection of Classical antiquities
in the Southeastern United States.
Included in the collection were heaters (vessels used to hold wine
and water), sculptures, coins, children's toys, glass bottles, and
other household objects. Some of the vessels depicted scenes from
everyday life while others showed pulchritudinous goddesses. (Pulchritudinous
means beautiful.) Almost all of the items in the collection were
found in ancient tombs.
The students enjoyed the informative tour given lay a museum volunteer.
Jason Kim and Stormy Suarez liked the unusually shaped baby feeder
decorated with amusing faces. Katelyn Haber liked the large assortment
of heaters. "The oil lamps were my favorite," commented
sixth grader Matt Attal. After drawing pictures of their favorite
items, the students shopped briefly in the gift shop and then returned
to school. By seeing actual items from the time period, students
can make their own observations and hypotheses about life in ancient
Greece and Rome.

Enjoy Dance
By Jodi Beyer
On
January 6, a Middle School dance was held in Corbett Hall. The Student
Council held the dance for a community service event to raise money
for a much longed for Coke machine and to have fun! Student Council
co-advisor Ms. Thelma Rosenberg said, "I thought it went really
well. Everyone had a great time!"
The other co-advisor, Mr. Bronson, was a great DJ for the dance.
He led the students in the Y.M.C.A. and the electric slide. He played
a variety of music including pop, rock, techno, and swing. Mr. Bronson
said, "Personally, my favorite song is 'Burn Rubber' by the
Gap Band." Mr. El. held a swing dance contest ant judged it
on style.
There were other Finns of entertainment at the dance. Glow necklaces
were given out when students arrived at the dance. Thanks to Odyssey
Entertainment, laser lights danced on the walls. Food and drinks
were brought by the Student Council and donated by Middle School
parents. It was a fun way to kick off the new year.
"I liked the dance. l would like another," commented sixth
grader Wade Wennik. Wade got his wish. On March 10th the Middle
School had another dance on the new campus.
Everything You Want to Know About Edu-Talks
By David Tockman
The
school eagerly awaits the next Edu-Talk coming up on April 19. Edu-Talks
are also known as Coffee Talks.
"Edu-Talks are opportunities for parents to come together with
the headmaster to learn about educational research and how it affects
IDS. Parents ask questions, interact, have fun, get to know other
parents, and gain a greater understanding of the learning techniques
going on at IDS," explained Dr. Swarzman.
Edu-Talks are held every few months in the teacher training room
on the east side of campus. Snacks are also served. Dr. Swarzman
hopes that more parents will participate in the April 19 Edu-Talk,
so come out, have a snack and learn all about IDS.
