IDS
Architects have Lowdown on New Middle School
By Jason Ehrlich
Gerry Curts and Sandy Clark are the architects for IDS. They have
designed almost all of the buildings IDS has now. They are also
in charge of the new middle school under construction now.
Mr. Curts and Ms. Clark are only two of the ten architects that
planned the new campus, but being the top architects for Curts Gaines
Hall architects, they are going to see to it that the new school
is ready to move into by the end of Thanksgiving break
The new campus has many requested luxuries and features. Some of
these include larger lockers, an air-conditioned cafeteria, a new
gym, a complex computer system, and classrooms specialized for the
subject to be taught there.
The materials in the new campus were chosen on purpose. The metal
on the outside is cost efficient, low maintenance, and was built
faster than conventional materials could have been. On the inside,
it is almost soundproof, and perfect for student concentration.
"This new campus will be more like a high school than your
old building was," said chief architect Clark.
Nature was also worked into the design with trees left standing
and new ones being planted. "Even with all of the dust and
construction, trees were left untouched, and new ones were planted,"
said Curts.
Many thanks to architects Gerry Curts and Sandy Clark for building
our new and existing school. Middle schoolers look forward to moving
in after Thanksgiving!
Students
Enjoy Being Head
By Alison Tomlin
Headmaster for the Day started two years ago as an idea for the
Copacabana fundraiser. The faculty decided that this would be a
good way for kids to have some fun and see what being a principal
is all about.
Middle schoolers loved the idea and sent their parents on a mission
to win Headmaster for the Day. At Copacabana and other big events,
the school has had silent and live auctions on class baskets and
other donated material. The parents-placed their bids to win cool
stuff for their kids. Headmaster for the Day was one of the prizes
that was up for bid.
Johnny Messina was the first middle school student to be Headmaster
for the Day. This seventh grader liked it a lot. Andrew Lau, eighth
grade, also become headmaster for the day both last year and this
year. He explained, "I enjoyed making the rules and not having
to do homework."
Michael Silva, a seventh grade student this year, was the last middle
schooler to be headmaster. "Being Headmaster for the Day was
really fun. I had a lot of fun driving the golf cart and making
my speech to the school assembly," Michael clarified. "It
was worth the money!"
All the middle school headmasters have enjoyed the idea of it all
and hope to possibly do it again. Good luck!
Ms.
Lotzkar Teaches Drama!
By Ashley Sinkiewicz
Ms. Lotzkar started out her IDS teaching career in fifth grade.
Now after two years of teaching fifth grade and Pre-K, she was given
the exciting opportunity to teach drama to everyone on campus, Pre-K
through eighth grade.
" I love teaching drama!" said Ms. Lotzkar. She also thanked
Dr. Swarzman for helping her re-discover a wonderful part of herself
that she forgot existed.
The Middle School wheel has seventh grade taking drama this trimester.
Ms. Lotzkar picked the play Marmalade Gumdrops for the seventh grade
to perform because she thinks it has a great message for children
and especially for adults.
Its message is that our imagination keeps us young, excited about
life, and enjoying each day as it comes to us. For Fine Arts Night'
on December 7, 2000, the lucky seventh graders get to choose the
part they want for that night.
"I can't wait to do the play," said Caroline Decker before
the performance.
